Asher: “Mom, did any white people die in the Sand Creek Massacre?”
Me: “Hmmm, Bud, I don’t know. We’ll have to look that up.” (My standard answer.)
Emi: “What’s a massacre?”
Asher: “It’s a battle.”
Me: “Actually, a massacre is a very horrible kind of battle. It means that something very unfair happened — like maybe one side was unarmed, or maybe the winners killed every single last enemy.”
Asher: “It’s kind of like tonight, Emi, when I beat Daddy at Thomas the Train Pop-up Game. That was a massacre.”
