Emi-ism of the Day

She was desperate to tell me something, but I was desperate to lay the baby down for a nap.  She kept trying to get close to me so she could whisper in my ear, but I kept pushing her away out of fear she would wake her baby sister.  (You see, getting the baby down to sleep is a crapshoot at best around here — the baby is a light sleeper and the 5-year-old and 3-year-old don’t exactly grasp the meaning of absolute quiet during nap time.  I keep thinking that someday the big kids will refrain from hollering or slamming a door or needing a snack or a book read aloud and then, on that special day, the stars will align and I’ll be able to get the baby down for a nap… but it hasn’t happened yet.)

Like now.  Emi was absolutely sure she needed to tell me something of extreme importance exactly at the moment I was trying to lay the baby down.  Every time Emi came close, the baby’s eyes would flutter open again.  Finally I gave up and, with an irritated sigh, beckoned Emi closer so she could tell me her Very Important Secret and we could get on with the day.  She sidled up until her nose was touching my ear and her wispy hair tickling my face, and she whispered with her sweet little lisp:  “God bless the U.S.A.”
