You know the Progressive Insurance commercial where Flo is sitting at the dinner table with her adult siblings and her parents? I really get a kick out of the cliche conversation that takes place between the mom and the three grown-up kids (Janice, Todd, and Flo):
Mom: At book club, they were asking me what you’re doing now, Janice.
Janice: Blogging.
Todd: Your blog is just pictures of you in a mirror.
Janice: It’s called a fashion blog, Todd.
Flo: Well, I’ve been helping people save money with Progressive’s discounts.
Mom: Flo, can you get Janice a job?
…
Janice: Where’s your wife, Todd?
Todd (holding a baby): Vacation.
Flo: … discounts like homeowners, multi-policy…
Sometimes I like to think of prairiemom.me as my fashion blog.
I want you to know that I know the world doesn’t take blogging too seriously. And please know that I don’t take it too seriously, either. I know I’m not changing international policy here. Life will go on if I’m not publishing every little random thought that crosses my mind. I know that blogging is hardly necessary for the survival of anyone.
But it is very good for my well-being. Because I have always had a need to write my life. I write in my sleep. I write in my daydreams. I feel a sense of accomplishment and relief when I get my thoughts sorted out on the glowing screen.
And if sharing those thoughts occasionally helps someone to feel a sense of community, to recognize themselves in my follies and feel not so abnormal or alone because of it, then I’m happy to help. With my fashion blog.
